BLAIR'S BRITAIN, 2003

John Smith! you should be living at this hour;
   Britain has need of you: she is bereft
   Of decent leaders: people, Right and Left,
At home, at work, alone or joined in fight,

Have been robbed of their hard won native right
   To good conscience. We're ruled by selfish men:
   O! raise us up, return to us again;
And give us honour, virtue, freedom's might.

Your soul though like a Star, held not apart:
   You spoke truth's words to all men equally,
   Clear as the naked heavens, plain to see;
   So did you travel on life's common way
In cheerful comradeship; thus your brave heart
   To selfless duty would have led the way.
